Orlando, FL – December 13, 2016. At PowerGen International, SENS (Stored Energy Systems, LLC) today announced a revolutionary family of battery chargers for the engine-generator starting and marine markets. Called the MicroGenius 2, the new chargers can nearly double the life of most genset starting batteries and conserve enough energy over time to pay for themselves.
More Power, Less Space. The new chargers are SENS’ second generation of MicroGenius high efficiency switchmode chargers. MicroGenius 2 chargers deliver up to 50% more power with models at nearly one eighth the weight and one quarter the volume of comparable legacy chargers. The chargers employ ultra-fast digital signal processing to implement advanced charging algorithms that revolutionize the charging of conventional batteries.
Smarter Charging. At the heart of the new units are SENS’ Dynamic BoostTM and new HELIXTM (High Efficiency LIfe eXtending) technologies. Patented Dynamic Boost recharges batteries in the shortest possible time, while minimizing the risk of overcharging. Dynamic Boost is the only system that automatically modifies charging in response to changing DC loads, battery state of charge & condition, temperature, etc.
HELIX is an all new charging technology that can double the life of genset starting batteries and reduce chance of catastrophic battery failure. Until now, starting batteries in gensets lasted only about half as long as the same batteries in vehicles (automobiles, trucks, construction equipment). Now with MicroGenius 2 HELIX technology, users can expect most genset starting batteries to last as long as they would in vehicles. Bill Kaewert, CTO of SENS confirmed that “HELIX will radically reduce early failures of genset starting batteries. The service life of genset batteries will approach or exceed that of lightly used automotive batteries. Just as important, battery performance will gracefully decline, rather than failing suddenly without warning.” Kaewert also said, “This is a milestone improvement of genset reliability, because sudden battery demise has historically caused more than 80% of genset failures.”
Reliable Everywhere. MicroGenius 2 chargers are ready for tough genset and marine duty, where conditions — temperature, humidity, dust, and moisture — are often extreme. With models UL-rated to 60o C, the MicroGenius 2 has a die-cast chassis to deliver exceptional convection cooling without the use of failure-prone fans. Electronics are protected from corrosion with high-grade conformal coating. And with their UL-classified rainproof enclosure, MicroGenius 2 enclosed models deliver IP22 / NEMA 3R protection; they don’t need drip shields to protect them from dripping water.
Class-Leading Efficiency, Compliance. SENS MicroGenius chargers are the first genset starting chargers to meet the demanding California Energy Commission (CEC) efficiency standards, required for all chargers sold into California as of 2017. The chargers operate at a peak efficiency of 93% and use less than 3 watts when in standby mode, easily saving enough power over a typical lifetime to pay for themselves. The chargers also meet appropriate UL, CSA, NFPA, IBC Seismic, and ABS / USCG standards for safety and performance.
The MicroGenius 2 is available in three power levels: Model 180 provides either 10 amps @ 12 volts or 6 amps @ 24 volts. Model 300 provides 12A @ 12V or 10A @ 24V. Model 450 delivers 15A at either 12V or 24V. All chargers feature universal AC input (90-265 VAC, 50-60Hz) and are available with or without an LCD display and Form-C alarm contacts. Industry standard Modbus and J1939 communications are standard on all models for easy connection to building automation systems and genset controllers. MicroGenius 2 chargers are available in January 2017.
